FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 7, 2010
WELLINGTON COUNTY – Following ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Environment (MOE) regarding the long-term maintenance of the closed Elora Landfill and Transfer Station, and at their suggestion, the County of Wellington (the County) has purchased a small portion of the property adjacent to the eastern boundary of the former fill area comprising approximately 0.91 hectares (2.25 acres) in a 30 m wide strip.
The addition of this property as official buffer to the site’s Certificate of Approval will provide the County the
opportunity to improve drainage at the site and allow works to improve the final cap (surface seal) of the closed landfill. Please note that no landfilling or waste management operations will be permitted on this property, it will be utilized for the purpose of providing a controlled buffer between the limits of the historic
filling area and adjacent properties as would be consistent with current regulations.
This public notification is being provided in accordance with the MOE’s current submission recommendations.
If you have further objections with this plan, please provide written comments to Tesfaye Gebresghi, P.Eng., Supervisor, Waste Unit, Environmental Assessment and Approvals Branch, Ministry of the Environment, 2 St. Clair Avenue West, Floor 12A, Toronto, Ontario, M4V 1L5 by no later than July 7, 2010.
